Richard D. Baugh

Born: 1814

Died: 1893

R. D. Baugh was a clever businessman and popular politician.  He organized the first paid fire department in the city and bought the first fire engine for them.  He paved the riverside roads with cobblestones.  After his tenure as mayor he partnered with a man named Dill (possibly Benjamin Dill, later to become editor of the Memphis Commercial Appeal).  The two of them were active in a number of business ventures in and around Holly Springs, MS.

Baugh died in 1893 and is interred at Evergreen Cemetery, North Carrollton, Miss.

More from Goodspeed:

In 1857 R. D. Baugh was elected, receiving 827 votes to 619 for Samuel F. Magen. In 1858 Mr. Baugh was again elected by 1,187 votes, to 843 cast for George Dixon and 307 for John Martin. In 1859, R. D. Baugh received 1,139 votes, John Park 1,039, and [ a third candidate with the initials J. B. R. received 563 votes ]. Mr. Baugh was again elected in 1860, but the record of the vote is missing.

Here the history of Memphis is presented.  From the Chickasaw to the great New Madrid earthquake of 1811 on to the land's purchase by John Overton and Andrew Jackson, followed by incorporation and Civil War occupation.  Picking up with the yellow fever followed by the surrender of the city charter and the tenure of the former city as a taxing district of Shelby County and the state of Tennessee.  We continue Memphis history into the days of Crump and the progressive era when the city would be made to conform to order.  Memphis history is rich with time, music and commerce.  From the blues of Beale Street to Elvis Presley and Sun Records the City of Memphis been enriched by transporation, cotton, mules and hardware; bridge openings to celebrate and the sorrows of the 1968 Sanitation Strike which culminated in the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Memphis has persevered through pain and has been anything but dull.  This is our story...
