Richard D. Baugh

R. D. Baugh was a clever businessman and popular politician. He organized the first paid fire department in the city and bought the first fire engine for them. He paved the riverside roads with cobblestones. After his tenure as mayor he partnered with a man named Dill (possibly Benjamin Dill, later to become editor of the Memphis Commercial Appeal). The two of them were active in a number of business ventures in and around Holly Springs, MS.
Baugh died in 1893 and is interred at Evergreen Cemetery, North Carrollton, Miss.

In 1857 R. D. Baugh was elected, receiving 827 votes to 619 for Samuel F. Magen. In 1858 Mr. Baugh was again elected by 1,187 votes, to 843 cast for George Dixon and 307 for John Martin. In 1859, R. D. Baugh received 1,139 votes, John Park 1,039, and [ a third candidate with the initials J. B. R. received 563 votes ]. Mr. Baugh was again elected in 1860, but the record of the vote is missing.
