Doctor Ross

Born: 1925

Died: 1993

Born Isaiah Ross in Tunica, Mississippi, "Doctor" Ross learned to play the harmonica as a young child.  He further honed his skills in the army during World War 2.  Playing USO shows he learned a professional and versatile approach to music that would serve him well.

After the war Ross returned to Mississippi and the strong blues scene of Clarksdale, Mississippi.  He soon became a regular performer on local station WROX.  His band Dr. Ross and the Interns performed the usual Delta picnics and parties before Ross decided to go it alone as a solo artist, playing guitar, harmonica and also singing.

His ability to play serious harmonica while also playing guitar is almost unmatched.  After Sam Phillips recorded him for Chess Records in 1951 Ross decided to follow Phillips to Memphis where he continued to record and play regular spots on local radio station WDIA.

Over time the tide of white performers earning big money took the attention of Phillips and Ross began to believe that his royalties were being used to promote Elvis Presley.  Leaving Sun, Ross moved to Flint, Michigan where he found work on the automobile assembly lines.  Although he did some small recordings while working for General Motors, he basically left the music business.  After a few public appearances in the 1970s and 80s Ross died in 1993 at 68 years of age.

He is buried in his adopted home of Flint, Michigan.

Here the history of Memphis is presented.  From the Chickasaw to the great New Madrid earthquake of 1811 on to the land's purchase by John Overton and Andrew Jackson, followed by incorporation and Civil War occupation.  Picking up with the yellow fever followed by the surrender of the city charter and the tenure of the former city as a taxing district of Shelby County and the state of Tennessee.  We continue Memphis history into the days of Crump and the progressive era when the city would be made to conform to order.  Memphis history is rich with time, music and commerce.  From the blues of Beale Street to Elvis Presley and Sun Records the City of Memphis been enriched by transporation, cotton, mules and hardware; bridge openings to celebrate and the sorrows of the 1968 Sanitation Strike which culminated in the death of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.  Memphis has persevered through pain and has been anything but dull.  This is our story...
